Social media background check guides
Short answer: Some screening vendors publicly describe social media lookbacks of up to seven years, but actual employer, vendor, and platform coverage varies. Your own account exports are one practical way to review years of activity without manually scrolling every profile. All nine supported platforms offer an account-data export. Delivery ranges from minutes to a day or two, and Reddit asks you to allow up to 30 days, though some people get theirs within hours.

Download your data, platform by platform
PruneSocial reads the text of your Pinterest pins, saved pins, boards, and About section. It does not review images. Here’s what screeners look at on Pinterest and a ten-minute self-check.
Tips that apply to every platform
- Request everything at once. Waits run from minutes to weeks, so start them all together.
- Choose All time. Meta defaults to the last year only, which leaves out most of your history.
- Choose JSON when asked. It's the machine-readable format PruneSocial reads.
- Watch the expiration dates. Some download links last only 4 days.
If your export won’t load
Finding the ZIP on your phone
- iPhone: Safari saves downloads to the Files app, in Downloads (under On My iPhone or iCloud Drive). On the scan page, tap the upload box, choose Browse, open Downloads, and pick the file that ends in .zip.
- If you already tapped the ZIP in Files, iPhone unzips it into a folder with the same name. The original .zip is still sitting next to it. Pick that one, not the folder.
- Android: Chrome saves downloads to the Downloads folder. Open your phone’s Files app (Files by Google on many phones), go to Downloads, and you’ll see the ZIP there. On the scan page, tap the upload box and choose it from Downloads.
- Very large exports can be slow on a phone, because the ZIP is opened on the phone itself. If yours runs to hundreds of megabytes, use a computer, or request a smaller export with only the activity categories. The Facebook and Instagram guides show which boxes to check.
Signs you have the wrong export
- It only covers the last year. Facebook, Instagram, and Threads default to Last year. If your report only shows recent items, request a new export with the date range set to All time.
- It came as HTML. Meta also defaults to HTML. Likes and comments still read from HTML, but some files, such as your own Instagram post captions, only come through in JSON. Choose JSON when you request it.
- TikTok says no comments or captions were found. The TikTok export has to be requested in JSON format.
- The scanner can’t tell which platform it came from. Make sure it’s the original ZIP the platform sent you, not a ZIP you made yourself, and not a photo or media download.
- It reads the file but finds nothing to score. Either the account has no posts, comments, or likes with text, or the categories that hold them were left out of the request. Check the platform’s guide for which ones to pick.
Split archives and failed downloads
- Big exports can come in several ZIPs. Google Takeout and Meta can split a large download into parts. Download every part and drop them all in together. The scanner combines parts from the same platform into one report.
- “Doesn’t look like a complete ZIP file.” The download probably didn’t finish. Wait for it to complete, or download it again from the platform.
- Don’t unzip and re-zip it. A ZIP you build yourself changes the folder layout the scanner looks for. Upload the original.
- On a Mac, Safari may unzip downloads for you. If all you have is a folder, use Upload files manually on the scan page (every platform except Pinterest), or turn off “Open safe files after downloading” in Safari’s settings and download it again.
- The download link expired. Some platforms keep the file for only a few days. Request a new export and download it as soon as it’s ready.
What the free preview does and doesn’t tell you
- It scores a 50-item sample, spread across the platforms and dates you added, and shows you each item it scored and how it was rated.
- It gives full fix steps for the most serious finding in that sample, so you can see what the report’s advice looks like.
- A Clear preview doesn’t mean your whole history is clear. It’s a sample. A flag in 50 items is a good reason to check the rest.
- It doesn’t count everything that would be flagged. The full Screening Report scores up to 5,000 items from the last seven years and lists every flag with a fix.
- Neither one checks photos, videos, or private messages, and neither predicts what any employer will decide.
