How to Download Your TikTok Data
Short answer: In TikTok's Settings, go to Download your data and choose JSON. PruneSocial uses your comments and the captions on your own videos. Likes and favorites aren't scored because the export doesn't provide the liked content as usable text. The default TXT format won't work with PruneSocial.
Step by step
- On tiktok.com, open the menu (☰) and click General under Settings.
- Under Data, click Download your data.
- On the Request data tab, change the file format to JSON, then include Posts and Comments. Likes and Favorites aren't needed, because their content isn't available as usable text for scoring.
- Click Request data. When it’s ready, download it from the Download data tab.
TikTok defaults to TXT, change it to JSON, the scan can’t read the TXT version. Files are only available for 4 days, and submitting a new request cancels the previous file.
Why download it before a job search
TikTok's export can contain posts, comments, likes, and favorites. PruneSocial uses your comments and your own video captions for scoring. Likes and favorites aren't scored. Files are only available for 4 days after they're ready.
Some screening vendors publicly describe social media lookbacks of up to seven years, so PruneSocial uses a seven-year review window for eligible dated activity. Actual employer and screening-provider practices can vary. Your own export is the most complete way to see what's there. See the sources and methodology.
What's in the file that matters
You don't need to unzip anything or dig through folders. The scan reads: user_data_tiktok.json. Everything else in the export, including photos and messages, stays on your computer.
